2004 BREW TO BREW RELAY TOPS 2000 RUNNERS AGAIN!
OVER $10,000 RAISED FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS.
If you Google the name "Clay Dickason" you will find references to his seven years as the SM South Cross Country Coach and an occasional high finish in a 5,000 meter race such as his eleventh place in the Thanksgiving 5K back in 2000. But now Clay is embarking on new ground, winning his first ultra, the 44 mile Brew to Brew that starts at the Boulevard Brewery, in Kansas City, Missouri, and ends at the Free State Brewery in Lawrence, Kansas. Clay's time of 5 hours, 18 minutes and 17 seconds was the second fastest per mile pace in the ten year history of the event. Kansas ace, Steve Riley, covered the 1995 course which was a mile longer in 5:22.
The scratch team of Leblow, Worley, Foley, Muchow and Webb came down from Fort Leavenworth and won not only the Ft. Leavenworth trophy but also the overall scratch trophy in the time of 4:06:20, a scant thirty seconds ahead of the Muledogs from Warrensburg who had to run with one runner missing.
Four Sandrats from Lawrence led by the ageless Steve Riley took the Mike Ott handicap trophy. Mike Ott was a professor of art at KU and captained the winning team in 1995 before falling from a ladder later that year.
The Metro Walk and Run Ladies, led by Julia Scherer, captured the Ladies handicap trophy, being careful not to get lost as in 2003.
After missing the Two-Person Team Trophy by seconds in 2003, Ben Schloegel teamed with Scott Wilson to take this year's award. Ben competes in Duathlons and Triathlons all over the country.
Dawn Long from Poplar Wisconsin took the Ladies Solo trophy, The Running Elvi edged out the Convicts (again) for the Jack Boyer Spirit Award, and the best team name came from Jill Lohmeier: "STARTED STOUT, FINISHED ALE'N."
Other team names worthy of note: "Hops, Skip & a Drunk", "Only Ten Legs to the Kegs", "Start Spreading the Brews", "Wheat for us, we're Barley Running", "Brew let the dogs out", "Ad Cerevisia Ad Aspera", "Beer Pressure", and "Slippery Nipples."
